Bumper Sticker Theology - God won’t give you more than you can handle

July 23, 2023

This Sunday is the third in the series on “Bumper-Sticker Theology”, with the slogan “

”. Although there is no verse in the Bible with this sentence, there are a couple of passages which could imply this. But nothing could be further from the truth. Our trust in God assures us that He treats all His (adopted) children equally; he doesn’t apportion burdens based on an assessment of an individual’s ability to cope with that burden. I Corinthians 10:13 reminds us that God is faithful and when we are tested, He will provide the way out so that we may be able to endure it.

My message for Sunday will look at the elements that we need so that we can endure the burdens which we encounter, and to provide reassurance that these elements are sufficient. The elements are needed to provide Stability in our lives.

It has been mathematically proven and experience has confirmed that a three-legged support (like a tripod) provides the most stable support, regardless of the irregularity of the surface on which it is placed.

If we are to endure the knocks and blows that the world throws at us, we need this three-pronged stability. As Christians, we are familiar with both stabilisers:

• the Trinity of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and

• Faith, Hope, and Love.

By having a firm faith in God, we can be assured that He will share our burdens, and to have the confidence to hope (expect and desire) that the outcome will be in accordance with God’s grand plan.
